On that day the devotees of Lord Muruga undergo fasting and worship the Lord by reciting “kandar Shashti kavacham” which is very dear to Lord Muruga. This Shashti is dedicated to lord Muruga. The day which falls on the sixth day of Shukla paksha of every month is called “Shashti”. Therefore, he is called by the name shanmukha.
